Basically I owe my life to one of my first bosses, Gary Bernloher of Florida Trend. He not only gave me the confidence that I needed to fly, but he taught me one of the most important keys to good design... KERNING. Kerning is the space between the letters when words are typed out. If a graphic designer doesn't know what kerning is, they can't work for CE Design Co. That's the first question in the interview process. Kerning must be adjusted to achieve design that looks professional. Check out the next logo you see. If there's unequal space between the letters, or a big gap between the "V" and the "O", you can probably bet that baby was designed on 99designs.com. Logos and headlines are probably the two most important things that you have watch your kerning on.

One website puts it like this: The term kerning refers to adjusting the space between two letters. You have the ability to alter the space between letter pairs, making minute adjustments until your type looks just right.

That's our lesson for today... so go ahead and get your KERN on.

Advertising Gone Wrong

Coming back to the office yesterday, I came across this innovative way of thinking that was implemented by what is clearly a very classy and sophisticated fruit stand. If you are from the Central Florida area, you would have to live under a rock not to have heard of "Winters & Yonkers". These two guys have billboards, radio ads and commercials all over the place. Apparently the marketing company they are using definitely knows how to spread the word, but what they might lack is the follow up. Brand Management is not only about the way your logo is used, but also about how your advertising materials are distributed or for this matter, disposed of. I would like to think that the guys just trying to help out the little fruit stand across from the location of their billboard, but I am having a hard time convincing myself of that... I guess they might really have to get aggressive.

About 3 months ago, armed with a box of pink donuts and high hopes, we approached Fred's Market about being the marketing and advertising firm that they turned to on a regular basis. That might have been one of the most convincing box of donuts east of the Mississippi because since that day, we have stopped seeing green beans and turnip greens. We've created a new logo and identity campaign for their upcoming curbside takeout program. We've cleaned up their menus through skillful graphic design and organized typography. We have equipped them with an advertising campaign that highlights three of the most valuable characteristics from their company. Summed up... we've had a blast. It has been the perfect summer project. Above you will see a sampling of what we created. We've enjoyed jumpin' in and gettin' dirty... putting a twist on their current materials and bringing them up to speed with the look that they desired all along. We've given them a rustic, down-home, farm fed feeling that conveys the emotions you feel when you sit down with your family and dig into a big bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy. Today is the day. Postmarked ontime!! The birds are taking flight and we will see if they have enough impact on the judges of the Sappi Ideas That Matter Grant. We will see if we were able to pull off receiving just under $50,000 to give the birds just a little boost. Here's a description of what that project will entail if granted the funds:

Description of the Proposed Project:
The goal for Birds of Hope (BOH) is to provide brand management through the development of supporting brand materials, while helping to organize and enhance the overall image. Through the items requested, we would like to help BOH ease day to day operations, expand their already thriving product base, and cohesively work with a common goal of raising more funds.

One: Provide BOH with a Professional Brand Image through design and printing of a stationery package; organization, copywriting, and printing of a media kit; packaging for the current products; organization and printing of a merchandising kit; an online advertising budget; and bumper stickers. All items will aide in spreading the word about BOH.

Two: Launch of an Apparel Line. We would like to introduce an apparel line that compliments the newly created brand image. The launch of this new line will help create more income for BOH to donate to various non profit organizations. The newly created apparel line will include popular fits and also clearly communicate the message of hope through creative and witty design. The overall goal of the apparel line is to raise awareness while raising funds.

Three: Informative Ecommerce Website. The newly developed website will not only present an organized and informative front online for BOH, but it will act as a portal for business. The new site will include everything listed above for ease of operation.

Currently: CE Design Co. has developed a logo and website, as well as a few other pieces of supporting brand material for BOH. We have, however, been limited in terms of funds spent on photography, copywriting and printing. We feel if you are able to provide us with the grant to develop the materials listed above, BOH will be able to soar even higher than they already have.

Keep your fingers crossed and say alittle prayer... we sure hope that these birds will fly high!

One Arm Brandit

Don't worry... it's not her mouse arm, but our sad little Sonya is down to one arm. Over the weekend she thought it would be a great branding move to represent CE Design Co. by wearing a hot pink branded cast everywhere she went. You should see all the attention she is getting! We will start suggesting this marketing move to all of our clients. Nope really she walked into her kitchen and tripped, catching herself with a wrist that just couldn't hold up against the blow. Even though we prefer to think that she really just wanted to wear our brand on her sleeve, we wish her a speedy recovery in getting that cast removed. And you better believe that even though she's only working with one arm, she shinin' brighter than most others out there designin'.

This is something we gave you a sneek peak at a few weeks ago but are now able to unveil the piece in its full glory. Gotta love it... right? This was created for Johnson's BBQ in Plant City, Florida. It's a finger lickin' good BBQ joint that serves up everything from pulled pork to fried pickles! Sometimes the south is good. Beautiful afternoon spent with this family while trying to capture the already developed personality of little Ella. She was quite cooperative considering all the wardrobe changes and props she went though in a matter of a few hours. Here and there, we would see her eyes, but she mainly save those for her daddy. Overall, the shoot was a success. A prayer has been said for the parents as they begin to raise Ella, their first child.

Starbucks Logo Update.

If you can recall, we blogged in January about the updated Starbucks logo.

The new logo was officially released last Tuesday, March 9, on all its cups. The new logo also appeared on signs at a handful of stores, and will show up on more storefronts in the future.

The implementation of the new logo onto many of the mediums is really looking good. At first, we were alittle unsure of what the finished product, but it is amazing how the overall look of a logo can change once it is placed on or with other object.

We especially love the way they blew up the face and placed it on the coffee sleeve. We couldn't have done it any better if they asked us!

This is the fourth version of Starbucks' logo since the company's beginnings in Seattle in 1971. The first update came in 1987, and the most recent update had occurred in the 1990s as the company went public.

As it was stated by the company, the new logo "is better suited to the company's expansion beyond coffee and cafes into a wider array of products sold at other retailers and into more international markets."

Today I had the blessing of spending some time with my good friends Ashley and Neil and their new little bundle of joy. It's such a neat time in my life because a good number of the people close to me are beginning to have babies. As it is a new adventure for them and for me, with the photography of babies, we decided to take this afternoon and see what would happen if we stuck a baby in a bucket... Although the sun was alittle bright and heat alittle much, I think overall, Ryland could get much sweeter than this. Thanks to Ashley and Neil for letting me spend the time with them this afternoon :)

Creative Ways to Use QR Codes for Marketing

Not sure what a QR code is? Not to worry.

More commonly found in Japan, QR is short for Quick Response. A QR code is a 2-D barcode that can be scanned and then transfer information by using the camera of a smart phone, which we here at CE all love to have and use as our main communication with the outside world.

Below are some creative ways to implement QR codes as part of your company communications.

1. QR codes on business cards. In order to simplify the design of your business card, you can create a QR code that will lead people to your Twitter and Facebook accounts. Still have some contact info on the card as well.

2. Use QR codes to get Likes and Follows. You can create mobile-friendly landing pages with Facebook like buttons or lead them to your Twitter page for a quick follow. So far, however, the Like buttons that QR tags generate lead to the Facebook website rather than the mobile app.

3. Build your email subscriber list. Use your QR code to send people to your email signup. You can also employ QR codes to distribute promotions, discounts and giveaways through email or not.

4. Get the phone ringing. If you want to get the phones ringing--at your business or at campaign headquarters--you can create a QR code that will dial a predetermined number. Likewise, QR codes can generate SMS text messages.

FUN FACT FOR THE DAY! The margarita is the most common tequila based cocktail in the US. We like to think we are up on the trends!

Either way you take it, on the rocks or frozen, today be sure to cheers to the Margarita, and don't be surprised if you run into us doing exactly that on our lunch break.

Somethings Fishy...

Long John Silver's will eventually unveil a new identity design and tagline, "We Speak Fish," as shown above. "The new look attempts to change the perception of LJS from a low-end, boppy fast-food chain to a faux, semi-upscale one." We at CE think that the little fishy is pretty cute and the new, clean typeface is a huge improvement over their old (smelly) letters. The tagline is one of the most clever ones we have heard in a while, although the point of it may lack alittle. Glad they can speak fish but what about that makes me want to eat the fish. Still, pretty clever little line.

The new identity shows improvement in regards to the older design, and resembles the look of a semi-upscale restaurant, like Red Lobster. Sadly, as stated in the article, more of their brand will have to take the same uphill trend to get the perception of "upscale" across.

One of my favorite sites to visit is A Cup of Jo, Joanna Goddard's blog. Jo posts her thoughts on a variety of subjects, from unique art she's found to free giveaways to fashion and travel, all of which we at CE Design Co. love! When I first found this site through a friend, I literally spent 2 hours reading her writings and clicking through the links she shares. She connects her readers to shops all around the world, like Twig & Thistle, the people responsible for the perfect sticker shown here. Every time I go to her blog, I find a new, creative DIY project I want to try. She offers several ideas on cheap options for gifts, weddings and home decorations. Joanna's photos make you want to travel, create and completely reinvent yourself. It brings such a fresh perspective to the everyday, I hope you'll take a second to check it out too!

The Tampa Bay Lightning Lack Their Voltage.

Recently, your beloved Tampa Bay Lightning have introduced a new logo.

Here's a little background as to what is going on, just in case you haven't heard.

"The Lightning worked with SME, a strategic brand development firm servicing the sports and entertainment industries, to create the new logo. “Bold”, “classic”, “iconic” and “hockey-centric” were the words that inspired the new designs. The previous circular logo shape was evolved into a contemporary oval shape to better represent the speed and power of NHL hockey competition as well as the upward direction of the club."

This new logo was unveiled with new uniforms that will be used starting next season.

A Day in the Life of No Internet

This is a recent news story that made its way to the offices of CE Design Co.

"In response to increasing civil unrest, the Egyptian government appears to have disabled almost all Internet connectivity with the rest of the world. The Internet's global routing table, which is used by Internet routers to determine where to send traffic, has had virtually every Egypt-bound route withdrawn, giving the Internet traffic no path either into or out of the country."

If we faced a similar dilemma with no Internet connection, first off, we would go crazy. Personally, I would be on the next plane to DC to speak with whoever was in charge... I would let him know that there would be no possible way I am able to function without internet. First off, I would not be able to online shop, check social media and look on craigslist for old furniture. Secondly, here at CE, we would not be able to do anything at all - we would be forced to declare it a "Shopping Day". Frankly, we would relate to the image above.

A Style for the Stylist - Brand Development

A fun little project came through our doors about a month or two ago. Courtney Philpot, who has an amazing eye for fashion needed alittle help with her company image. After many meetings, photoshoots and brainstorming sessions, CE Design Co. finally came up with a creative way to show her style. CE Hearts the Pantone Color of the Year

Pantone announced the 2011 color of the year as Honeysuckle 18-2120 and CE couldn't be happier. Although not an exact match, it comes close to the color everyone knows CE loves!

Starbucks Logo - A Step in the Right Direction?

If you haven't heard yet, welcome to 2011... One of the most publicized events thus far is the release of an updated logo for the coffee giant Starbucks Corporation.

We want to know your thoughts... Do you think this is a step in the right direction. Will you rush out to buy one of the first coffee cups with the new logo on it?

Starbucks, the world's biggest coffee chain, has unveiled a new logo that omits its name and the word "coffee", infuriating loyal customers.

The new green logo is essentially Starbucks' representation of a female siren - a half-human mythical temptress who led sailors to their deaths. The change, announced overnight during a webcast of a company meeting, comes as Starbucks is building new billion-dollar brands sold outside its cafes.

"Even though we have been, and always will be, a coffee company and retailer, it's possible we'll have other products with our name on it and no coffee in it," chief executive Howard Schultz said on the webcast.

For CE Design Co., it's hard to imagine our 2011 being much better than our 2010. We had great things happen for our company over the entire year. We gained some valuable clients, added some outstanding people to our crew and moved into a location that we love!

We don't want to gloat, but we are so thankful that our company was blessed and we are so excited that we feel some of this hard work has paid off... not necessarily in dollars but as to what people are saying about us.

No matter what 2011 has in store for us, we are confident that what we will bring to the table will be constant creativity. By continually evolving our ideas and constantly keeping up with the latest trends, we will be busting out brilliance this year.

TYPOGRAPHY... A funny little thing.

According to WIKIPEDIA, Typography is the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning).

If you ask me what my most favorite part of my job is, I would answer with just that... Typography. I could sit for hours on end and mess with fonts and all their different faces. Probably explains why I own a sweatshirt that says "KERN". It's just amazing what can come out of type...

We are pumped about seeing our latest TYPOGRAPHY project come to a completion. A huge wall mural will be plastered throughout the Highland Park Family Ministries Building. Installation is happening as we speak. Stay tuned to see the finished product.

As we have finally finished up our newest addition to our office with a separate meeting space, we are letting you inside the doors that we call CE Design Co. Much to our dismay, it appears that the pink pather snuck in last night and color splashed our whole place with his favorite color. Lucky for us, it's our favorite too!

It's a space that let's us come together to brainstorm and bust out brilliance.

We like to think that it is small but mighty!

So we're at it again... launching another website. Finally able to breath which feels amazing. Three of the largest sites we have ever taken on are now alive and kickin'.

Another content management system that has our client hard at work uploading millions and millions of products. Right about now they are loving us but it's going to be amazing for them in the long run because they won't have to call us every single time they need to make a revision to their website.

Launched!

www.SpringerPeterson.com is up and running and looking good. We redesigned their website from the ground up... well actually we redesigned everything. Updated their whole entire corporate image. Cute Isn't IT :) The great thing about their website is that it is a content management system so they can update anything they want to on their own. Also launched a facebook, twitter and blog for them. Love to see the world wide web becoming a prettier place one site at a time!

Friend them, follow them, do what you must, just be sure to give them a call if you spring a leak.

The website is launched and this completes an entire identity redesign for Peachee Construction. Logo, Business Card, Letterhead and Envelope, Slogan, Pocket Folder, Brochure and Website. We hooked them up and we are kind of partial, but we think they are looking pretty good.

Check it out... Marcia Peacock is taking herself to the next level. She had CE Design Co update her real estate sign to what you see above. She is starting to set herself apart rather than settling to blend in with the other millions of real estate agents around her.

We have still kept the colors intact with her national company but have given her some flair to thrive in a mundane environment.

Not only is she going to back her experience with great signs, but business cards and note cards to match!

Ok. We listened to everything you all said... and here are the results from yesterday's polls.

For Camellia Rose, most people liked option #1, but some did like the focus of the teapot in option #2. Therefore, we changed the colors around a bit to focus more on the teapot in option #1. Hope you like the results! Now go a drink the tea... it's 100% better than their logo.

As for those Koozies, it was all over the board, so we picked out some of the points that you liked and tried to make a combo. BTW - Caddie and Caddy are exactly the same. The dictionary actually gives us some creative freedom for once, therefore we stuck with the Caddie because the hanging "y" messed up our masterpiece.

We have a new intern... and we heart her already.

Meet Chelsea.

I’m Chelsea, the new and improved CE Design Drone. I cook. I clean. I design. I intern.

I graduated from Southeastern University last Saturday and now spend my nine-to-five within the lovely pink walls of CE Design Co.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and Journalism with a minor in music. Quite a combination, I know.

I am spending my summer at CE Design Co. helping with anything that's needed, and hopefully learning a thing or two along the way. Not to mention, I’m getting college credit for hanging out with Mac. Couldn't ask for much more.

I won’t even go into detail of where I’m from. Let’s just say I was born in New Jersey, lived in Malaysia somewhere along the way, and ended up here.

I like to rock out on my guitar (that is, if you consider my Brandi Carlile-esque style to be rocking out). I enjoy Saturday walks downtown with my boyfriend and aspire to own a teacup Chihuahua someday. Really.

Take a look at this ad found in this month's Glamour regarding CE's first love - Magazines. Can you tell which letter in the above picture belongs to which magazine? If so, you love magazines as much as CE does...

The Internet is exhilarating. Magazine are enveloping. The Internet grabs you. Magazines embrace you. The Internet is impulsive. Magazines are immersive. And both media are growing.

Barely noticed amidst the thunderous Internet clamour is the simple fact that magazine readership has risen over the past give years. Even in the age of the Internet, even among the groups one would assume are most singularly hooked on digital media, the appeal of magazines is growing.

Think of it this way: during the 12 year life of Google, magazine readership actually increased 11 percent.

What it proves, once again, is that the new medium doesn't necessarily displace an existing one. Just as movies didn't kill radio. Just as TV didn't kill movies. An established medium can continue to flourish so long as it continues to offer a unique experience. And, as reader loyalty and growth demonstrate, magazines do.

Which is why people aren't giving up swimming, just because they also enjoy surfing.

So we've got her for good... had to bribe her with a Keurig but she is here to stay. CE welcomes Sonya Baldwin. She'll be bringing her polished style to our established client base by helping us churn out some sweet designs on a daily basis. After graduating from the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Sonya gained experience working as a designer in Stuart, Florida before finding her true love on Craigslist. Pushing the pedal for an hour each way, Sonya will be here everyday!!

Here at CE... well, we're 99% original (we do look around for inspiration). Keep it current. Basically what we are saying is you won't pay a premium price for website design based upon a template. All of our websites are designed based upon your business and what makes it work... not upon our templates and what makes our lives easier. Oh and a little birdie told me you won't have to pay a premium for one of our custom designed sites either.

CE is super excited about all that is going on within it's pink walls... new contacts, new projects and new employees (CE hearts Sonya + Christian). Can't wait to see what the future will hold. Wrapping up a few identity projects this week as well as starting two new websites, both are going to be exciting. Needless to say, we all will be slaving away behind those macs (with Mac) all week long, working to make the world a prettier place.
